Priest Rejects Mugabe’s Money at Funeral, Calls Out Empty Politics
Father Cornelius of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Soy Parish in Likuyani Constituency, on Saturday, 17th Oct 2026 publicly rejected a contribution from area MP Innocent Mugabe during a funeral service at Otiendo in Likuyani Ward.
The priest challenged politicians to stop using funerals to distribute small amounts of money in exchange for applause, and instead put resources where they are truly needed.
“Kama pesa ni ya hospitali iende kwa hospitali. Kama ni ya barabara iende kwa barabara,” Father Cornelius said.
He further criticised the culture where politicians give residents “elfu tano” just to be clapped for, while communities continue to suffer from lack of development for five years.
The priest noted that in developed countries such as America, it is politicians who go to citizens seeking support for campaigns — not the other way round where leaders hand out small cash and expect praise.
The remarks come amid growing public frustration over the pace of development in Likuyani Constituency under the current leadership.
Residents at the funeral witnessed the unusual moment as the priest refused the contribution and used the platform to call for accountability and meaningful service delivery.
Questions on the ground:
Why is a priest rejecting a contribution from the area MP in public?
Is funeral cash replacing real development in Likuyani?
When will roads and hospitals receive the attention they deserve?
Stay informed. Stay ahead.
