Kona Mbaya – Spencton – River Nzoia Road: Governor Barasa’s Repeated Bitumen Upgrade Promises Still Unfulfilled.
Likuyani/Nzoia/Kona Mbaya – The Kona Mbaya – Spencton – River Nzoia road, a vital link for farmers, traders and commuters in Likuyani, remains in poor condition years after Governor Fernandes Barasa repeatedly promised to upgrade it to bitumen standards.
Here are the Governor’s key public statements on the project, quoted directly from his Facebook posts:
27 June 2025:
“The completion of the Likuyani County Aggregation and Industrial Park, alongside the upgrade of the Kona Mbaya–Nzoia Market–Spencon Road to bitumen standards, are important projects that will spur economic growth in Likuyani Sub-county and Kakamega County.”
27 October 2024 (during Catholic Family Day at St. Mark’s Nzoia Parish and St. Mathias Mulumba Catholic Church in Nzoia Ward):
“In the next Financial Year, we also plan to upgrade the Kona Mbaya – Spencon – Nzoia River Road to bitumen standards.”
3 September 2024 (meeting with MCA Collins Chapurukha):
Discussed “the planned upgrade of the Kona Mbaya - Spencon – Nzoia River Road to bitumen standards”.
15 August 2024 (at St. Paul’s Lwakhupa Catholic Church):
Listed the road among key projects the county aims to complete: “the upgrade of the ... Kona Mbaya – Spencon – Nzoia River Road”.
Despite these clear commitments spanning 2024 and 2025, as of April 2026 there is no visible construction, no contractor on site, and no confirmed start date for the bitumen upgrade.
Questions on the ground:
Why has the bitumen upgrade not started despite multiple public promises from the Governor since 2024?
How long will residents continue to endure dust, potholes and poor connectivity on this important road?
When will the county deliver on these repeated assurances?
