Kakamega Issues El Niño Advisory for October–December Rains
The County Government of Kakamega has warned farmers and agricultural stakeholders to start preparing early for above-normal rainfall expected during the October to December 2026 season.
In an advisory dated 7th September 2026 and signed by CECM for Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Cooperatives, Mophat Mandela, the county noted that the anticipated El Niño rains may lead to flooding, soil erosion, waterlogging, crop and livestock losses, fish escape, and damage to agricultural infrastructure.
Key recommendations include:
For Crop Farmers:
Harvest mature crops early and store them properly
Clear and maintain farm drains, waterways and culverts
Avoid cultivation on riverbanks and flood-prone areas
Strengthen soil and water conservation measures
For Livestock and Poultry Farmers:
Move animals from flood-prone areas to higher ground
Repair animal houses and improve drainage
Store adequate feed (hay and silage)
Strengthen disease surveillance and hygiene
For Fish Farmers:
Strengthen pond embankments and spillways
Install screens to prevent fish from escaping
Divert storm water away from ponds
The county has urged farmers to work closely with agricultural extension officers and report any flooding, crop damage, livestock deaths or fish losses promptly.
Early preparation, the advisory notes, will help protect livelihoods and reduce losses during the expected heavy rains.
Stay informed. Stay ahead.
