Kenya Records First Ebola Death
Kenya has confirmed its first case of Ebola after a Kenyan national who had been living in the Democratic Republic of Congo died in a Nairobi hospital.
Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale announced on Tuesday, 6th October 2026, that the patient tested positive for the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus.
The man had lived in the DRC for the past seven years. He fell ill about a month ago and was treated in several hospitals there before travelling by road to Kampala, Uganda, and then flying to Nairobi on Saturday, 3rd October.
He underwent routine screening at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport before being taken to hospital by a relative. Doctors later suspected a viral haemorrhagic fever and collected samples for testing, which returned positive for Ebola Bundibugyo.
The patient died late on Monday night. Health authorities have identified 28 contacts, including family members and healthcare workers, and are tracing 23 other passengers and four crew members who were on the same flight.
CS Duale assured the public that systems are in place to contain the disease and urged Kenyans not to panic.
The current Ebola outbreak in eastern DRC, caused by the rare Bundibugyo strain, has so far recorded thousands of cases and deaths. There is currently no approved vaccine or specific treatment for this strain.
Stay informed. Stay ahead.
