Kona Mbaya – Spencon – River Nzoia Road: MCA Collins Sifuna Chapurukha’s Repeated Bitumen Upgrade Promises Still Unfulfilled
Likuyani/Nzoia/Kona Mbaya – More than two years after Nzoia Ward MCA Collins Sifuna Chapurukha publicly backed the upgrade of the Kona Mbaya–Spencon–River Nzoia Road to bitumen standards, no contractor is on site and no work has started.
The road remains a dusty, pothole-filled nightmare for residents, farmers, patients heading to Nzoia hospital, and businesses. Yet the MCA has repeatedly featured in high-level promises that have delivered nothing.
Here is the exact timeline from official statements:
3 September 2024 – Governor Barasa held a meeting with Hon. Collins Chapurukha, MCA for Nzoia Ward, and explicitly discussed “the planned upgrade of the Kona Mbaya - Spencon – Nzoia River Road to bitumen standards.”
27 October 2024 – At St. Mark’s Nzoia Parish and St. Mathias Mulumba Catholic Church, the Governor again listed the Kona Mbaya–Spencon–Nzoia River Road as a priority to be upgraded to bitumen standards “in the next Financial Year.” MCA Chapurukha was among the leaders present and publicly associated with the announcement.
15 August 2024 – Governor Barasa stated that the upgrade of the Kona Mbaya–Spencon–Nzoia River Road was part of key development projects the county aims to complete.
27 June 2025 – The Governor repeated that the completion of the upgrade alongside the Likuyani Aggregation and Industrial Park “will spur economic growth in Likuyani Sub-county.”
As of April 2026, the road is exactly as it was — no grading, no murram, no bitumen, no contractor.
Questions on the ground for MCA Collins Sifuna Chapurukha:
You sat in these meetings and allowed your residents to believe the bitumen road was coming — why has nothing happened?
Which specific follow-up actions did you take as the area MCA to push the project?
How many more years will farmers, school children and hospital patients continue suffering on this road while you attend more meetings?
The people of Nzoia Ward are tired of photo-op promises. This is no longer just a county project — it is a promise your MCA personally stood behind.
Likuyani Digest will keep watching.
