Linda Mwananchi Accuses Ruto of Interfering with Masinde Muliro Market
The Linda Mwananchi Movement has released a statement condemning what it calls President William Ruto’s interference with the Masinde Muliro Market in Kitale, Trans Nzoia County.
In the statement dated Monday, 19th October 2026, the movement argues that the market was constructed by the Trans Nzoia County Government and that the function of building markets rests with devolved units.
According to the statement, the project was commissioned by the County Government of Trans Nzoia in the 2017/18 financial year at a cost of KSh 874,280,383. It further notes that audit queries raised by the Auditor General were later resolved under Governor George Natembeya’s administration, with the Senate County Public Investments Committee (CPIC) applauding the county’s efforts.
Linda Mwananchi accuses President Ruto of seeking to attach himself to the project due to a lack of national government projects to launch, and claims the deployment of police and heavy security at the market is a sign of political intimidation.
The movement has expressed solidarity with Governor Natembeya and the people of Trans Nzoia, urging them to remain firm in defence of devolution, the Constitution and the rule of law.
“We stand with Governor Natembeya and the people of Trans Nzoia County. The Masinde Muliro Market must serve the people for whom it was built,” the statement reads.
