Matunda, often cited by locals as one of the highest tax-generating towns in Kakamega County, is struggling with basic infrastructure challenges that many believe should have been addressed years ago. Despite its economic significance, the town continues to grapple with poor urban planning, lack of essential amenities, and deteriorating public services.
One of the major issues highlighted by residents is the poor state of roads, including key access routes such as the road leading to the sub-county hospital. These roads are reportedly in deplorable condition, making it difficult for patients, emergency services, and businesses to operate efficiently. Ironically, locals point out that even roads leading to private residences of leaders are not in good condition, raising further questions about prioritization and accountability.
In addition to road infrastructure, the town faces challenges in basic urban management. Residents describe Matunda as dirty and unorganized, with inadequate waste collection systems contributing to poor sanitation. The lack of adequate security lights in busy areas has also been flagged as a major safety concern, exposing residents and businesses to increased risk during nighttime hours.
Business owners and youth groups have expressed disappointment, noting that despite repeated promises during election periods, little tangible development has been realized. Many are now calling for transparency, better planning, and immediate action to improve living conditions.
Efforts to reach both Collins Chapurukha and Innocent Mugabe for comment were unsuccessful at the time of publication. However, residents insist that leadership must be held accountable and that Matunda deserves development that reflects its economic contribution to the county.
As pressure mounts, the situation in Matunda highlights broader concerns about service delivery and governance at the local level, with citizens increasingly demanding results rather than promises.
