Mugabe Leads Public Input on Tourism Reforms Bill
Likuyani Member of Parliament Hon. Innocent Maino Mugabe today chaired a session of the National Assembly Committee on Tourism and Wildlife during public participation on the proposed Tourism (Amendment) Bill, 2026 at the Malindi County Assembly Headquarters in Kilifi County.
The MP thanked residents of Kilifi for turning up and sharing their views, noting that public participation is a constitutional requirement in law-making.
What the Bill seeks to do
The Tourism (Amendment) Bill, 2026 aims to streamline the management of Kenya’s tourism sector. Its main proposals include:
Abolishing the Tourism Research Institute (TRI) and the Tourism Finance Corporation (TFC)
Transferring their functions to the Kenya Tourism Board (KTB)
Reducing duplication of roles among state agencies
Strengthening destination marketing, research, market intelligence and service delivery
Expanding the mandate of the Tourism Fund, including co-financing tourism projects with county governments
The government says the changes will improve efficiency and help Kenya attract more visitors.
Relevance to Likuyani
For residents of Likuyani, the Bill could have practical importance if it leads to stronger support for local tourism products.
The constituency is already developing two key sites:
Mawe Tatu (Mawetatu) Heritage Site in Sango Ward – part of the proposed Likuyani Linked Ecotourism Circuit. MP Mugabe has previously visited the site with county and Tourism Fund officials and committed to its development.
Mumonyonzo Dam Ecotourism Project in Nzoia Ward – a Tourism Fund-supported project that includes a conference facility, communal eatery, jetty and recreational facilities. Construction preparations have been ongoing.
A more efficient national tourism framework, especially one that allows the Tourism Fund to work more closely with counties, could open doors for better marketing, funding and infrastructure support for such local attractions.
Questions on the ground:
Will the merger of tourism agencies result in more practical support for emerging sites like Mawe Tatu and Mumonyonzo Dam?
How will Likuyani residents benefit if the Bill is passed?
Is the constituency positioned to take advantage of the proposed reforms?
Stay informed. Stay ahead.
