President William Ruto has announced that he ordered Tata Chemicals to cease operations at Lake Magadi, accusing the company of operating in Kajiado for decades without delivering sufficient benefits to local residents.
Speaking in Kajiado, President Ruto said the company had held its contract for about 100 years but had failed to establish significant industries, infrastructure and employment opportunities for the people of the county. He said Kenya would no longer allow its natural resources to be extracted without meaningful local benefits.
The President further announced that a new investor will take over operations at Lake Magadi. The incoming investor is expected to establish major value-addition industries in Kajiado, including a glass manufacturing plant and a chemical processing facility, with the aim of creating jobs and boosting the local economy.
