Water Cannons Deployed at Masinde Muliro Market Ahead of Natembeya’s Planned Visit
Heavy security, including water cannons and GSU officers, was deployed at Masinde Muliro Market in Kitale, Trans Nzoia County, on the night of Sunday into Monday, 19th October 2026.
The deployment comes amid a bitter dispute between Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya and President William Ruto over who should take credit for the newly completed market.
President Ruto officially commissioned the market last Friday. Governor Natembeya rejected the move, insisting the project was built using county funds, and announced he would relaunch the market and reallocate stalls to traders.
Natembeya had vowed to visit the market on Monday and dared police to arrest him.
With water cannons and security personnel now stationed at the facility, questions are rising over whether the Governor will be allowed to access the market and whether the standoff could escalate into violence in Kitale today.
Residents and traders are watching closely as the political tension between the national and county governments continues to deepen.
Stay informed. Stay ahead.
