ASOK Pushes for Circular Avocado Economy
The Avocado Society of Kenya (ASOK) has called on researchers, universities, investors, technology providers and development partners to collaborate in turning avocado waste into valuable economic opportunities.
In a statement, ASOK noted that Kenya’s avocado industry generates significant by-products that are often discarded, yet these materials could fuel new green enterprises and create extra income for farmers, processors and entrepreneurs.
The organisation outlined several practical opportunities, including:
Extracting oil from avocado processing rejects
Converting peels, seeds and residues into compost and organic fertiliser
Generating biogas and renewable energy from suitable avocado waste
Recovering useful compounds from seeds and peels for cosmetics and industrial use
Developing biodegradable materials and packaging from avocado seed starch
Exploring safe use of selected by-products in animal feed
Producing biochar and solid biofuels
Establishing waste collection and small-scale processing enterprises
ASOK said the goal is to move beyond disposal towards a circular avocado economy that delivers economic, social and environmental benefits.
The society is inviting partners to support research, pilot projects, technology transfer, investment and market access to commercialise these opportunities.
Stay informed. Stay ahead.
