Assembly Reviews Bill to Strengthen County Microfinance Corporation
The Kakamega County Assembly Committee on Trade, Tourism and Industrialisation, together with the Committee on Justice and Legal Affairs, have held a joint session to interrogate the Kakamega County Microfinance Corporation Bill, 2026.
The Bill seeks to establish a stronger legal framework for the County Microfinance Corporation to promote access to affordable financial services for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in Kakamega County.
During the session, the County Executive Committee Member for Trade, Mr. Geoffrey Owour, said the proposed law is an important step towards improving access to credit for ordinary traders and small business owners.
Committee chairpersons Hon. Benard Omboko and Hon. Silas Shihenje emphasised the need for thorough public and stakeholder participation before the Bill is passed.
Several MCAs, including Hon. Kevin Mahelo and Hon. Moses Musundi, supported the Bill, saying it will help entrepreneurs access credit, increase trade, and grow the local economy.
The County Attorney, Ms. Vivian Komwonyo, took the legislators through the key provisions of the Bill.
The Corporation already exists and has been offering low-interest loans, mainly targeting women and youth. The new Bill is expected to strengthen its operations and legal standing.
The committees are expected to continue scrutinising the Bill before it proceeds to public participation and eventual debate in the County Assembly.
Stay informed. Stay ahead.
