Govt to Import 25 Million Bags of Maize
The government will import 25 million bags of maize (90kg each) to bridge a projected food deficit caused by massive crop failure in key growing areas.
Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe made the announcement on Wednesday, 19th August 2026, saying arrangements for the imports are already underway.
Kenya consumes approximately 75 million bags of maize annually. However, reduced harvests due to drought and climate-related challenges are expected to create a shortfall of nearly 25 million bags.
“We will import maize. We have already made arrangements for that. We will manage the country. The country is not going to go hungry,” Kagwe said.
The CS noted that while the imports will provide an immediate solution, the government is also pushing long-term measures such as expanding irrigation projects, including Galana Kulalu, to reduce over-reliance on rain-fed agriculture.
