LIKUYANI, Kenya — Families across Likuyani Sub-County have expressed relief following the distribution of county bursary funds targeted at supporting vulnerable learners in secondary schools, technical institutions, and universities.
The financial relief drive, executed under the Kakamega County Government Bursary Fund, forms part of a broader countywide strategy to improve retention rates, reduce dropout figures, and ease the financial burden on low-income households amidst rising educational costs.
Equitable Distribution Across Wards
Sub-county education officers alongside local ward bursary committees oversaw the vetting process to ensure transparency and equitable allocation across all five wards in Likuyani. Priority was given to orphans, total dependents, learners with disabilities, and bright students from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds.
Beneficiaries include students enrolled in secondary institutions as well as those attending local Vocational Training Centers (VTCs) and universities across Kenya.
Empowering Youth Through Technical Skills
Speaking during the distribution exercises, local leaders urged young people to take advantage of technical training grants to enroll in vocational courses such as mechanics, electrical installation, plumbing, and agriculture.
County education officials reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring that no deserving student in Likuyani drops out of school due to a lack of tuition fees, promising sustained funding for future academic terms.
