Why Are Teaching Jobs Being Politicised?
National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has triggered anger among teachers after publicly admitting that he personally takes some Members of Parliament to State House, where they receive TSC employment letters.
According to the Speaker, some MPs are given as many as ten letters each. He further claimed that a number of these politicians later sell the letters to desperate job seekers for as much as KSh 400,000.
Teacher unions including KNUT and KUPPET have condemned the revelation, saying it confirms that teaching jobs are being distributed through political patronage instead of merit.
This raises serious questions:
Is the Teachers Service Commission still an independent institution, or has it become a tool for politicians?
Why should an MP decide who gets a teaching job?
How many qualified teachers in Likuyani have been locked out because of this system?
Questions on the ground in Likuyani:
Does the area MP, Hon. Innocent Mugabe, receive these TSC letters?
Does he give them freely to teachers who are waiting to be employed, or are the letters being sold?
How many teachers from Likuyani have benefited fairly from the recent recruitment?
Thousands of trained teachers remain jobless while employment letters are allegedly being traded in political offices. This is not service delivery — it is a betrayal of young people who went to college hoping for a fair chance.
Stay informed. Stay ahead.
